If you’re not on it, get on it. It’s fresh, straight outta Brooklyn (via CreamTeam) and the album to get is No Más. It’s got tunes that’ll keep you bobbin’ for dayz. If you’re livin’ in Stumptown, they’re coming to you on Friday. (Thanks for the lead, Ed.) K and I will be there.

I thought I’d mention that The Good Life album along with an earlier album, Midnight at the Movies, from Justin Townes Earle have been on my playlist for days. And I’ve been loving them. I found out about Earle in the September 2009 issue of GQ and when I visited Alabama a couple weeks ago I was delighted to find that my good friend L also had a love for Earle’s music. And it’s worth mentioning that it was perfect for singing to, as my girlfriend K and our friend S did as we drove from Mobile through Mississippi and on to New Orleans.

This album is swell. And it just keeps getting better and better, like a good pair of leather shoes.

“The guitar parts sound like intricate little steam-punk machinery. If you could bottle an aesthetic like renaissance paintings and listen to it, then you’d get something like Midlake.”-Joe Puglisi, review of Midlake: The Courage of Others

This past week I’ve been cycling The Lytics. They’re a hip hop group from Manitoba, Canada and they have a West Coast hip hop vibe that I’ve been enjoying for days. Stay Humble is my favorite from their latest and only self-titled album.

I think this video is pretty; not only is “Pip” cute in the t-shirt while rocking the guitar, the video just has great lighting. It was directed by the Benji Davies and Jim Field partnership Frater.  And the water-colored animation by Sarah Larnach is awesome. via Motionographer I really like the interior design of the motel room too. Ace!

Look how pretty!
I should thank the guy who created this font, and this guy too, for the RT button thingy.
It goes without saying that this must look like shit in an ancient browser (I have not and will not test it in IE). But if you’re too stupid to not upgrade, you don’t deserve my pretty design.
Actually… by “ancient browser”, I mean anything other than a webkit based one. Enjoy.

I’m a suckah for a good single-serving site. I used it this morning while sipping on a new favorite coffee from Extracto (I plan to do a review later).

Let me get a triggerman beat into the new year…

I brought in the new year right. And it started with a long tv watching sesh—I watched Notarized:Top 100 Videos of 2009. Actually, now that I’m reflecting on the moment, the year started off with BET letting me down by choosing (spoiler alert!) Jamie Foxx’s video as number one.

After the let down, K and I caught a ride with some friends and we headed over to an ex co-worker’s party. It wasn’t the best. When I first walked in, I was told that I looked like another person while I was standing by this person—AWKWARD. I didn’t even know this other person. And the only similarities we shared were that we wore glasses. The lady that made this pathetic discovery clearly had too much to drink. She later apologized and blamed it on the alcohol. This only brought back memories of the BET special I’d watched earlier though. After all the lameness and almost getting into a fight over the music we decided to split and go get whiffies at Whiffies Fried Pies.

The following is a list of terms that I’ve overheard, recently become aware of, and that I’ve thought up during the boring parts of my day.

  1. the brown note
  2. Sansabelt pants
  3. Nipsey Hussle
  4. shields on the runway
  5. The triggerman beat

John Prine—Country/folk singer-songwriter originally from Illinois, has achieved critical and commercial success since his move to Nashville in the early 1970s. His grandfather played guitar with Merle Travis, and he took up the instrument himself at the age of 14.  He was a postman in Chicago and had served in the military before beginning his musical career. Already a star in Chicago’s folk music scene, he was discovered in a local club by Kris Kristofferson. He is known for his wildly imaginative songs and unusual voice and singing style. His 2006 release “Fair and Square” was awarded the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album.  – 1984 studio portrait, Nashville by Jim McGuirevia The Selvedge Yard
If you’re a follower of this blog, you know from a previous post that I’m a fan of Mr. Prine. And when I ran across this photo of him (seen above), in his younger years, it was too hard for me not to share it. You might also recognize this photo from the album Aimless Love. It was taken by Jim McQuire and is part of his collection titled the Nashville Portraits.
